Description
A walking tour of Native American public art in downtown Portland will go from a Rick Bartow statue near Pioneer Courthouse to the Portland Building to several PSU buildings (including the Native American Student and Community Center, which is filled with Native art). There are hundreds of pieces of Native American public art in the Portland Metro. Dr. Tracy Prince (PSU) and Price Schaffer (Stanford) created a website and map showing how to find this art. They often added photos, artist names/tribes, where none existed online before. They gave a talk at AHC on this topic, where they were asked if this could become a walking tour. So, they created a walking tour of downtown Portland. A video and guidebook of the tour route are available at portlandnativeart.org. Dr. Prince will be leading this walking tour.
Dr. Tracy Prince is a Research Professor at Portland State University and Vice President of AHC’s board. She has uncovered much forgotten Oregon history in her books: Portland’s Goose Hollow, Portland’s Slabtown (co-authored with AHC Programs Manager, Norm Gholston), and Notable Women of Portland (co-authored). She has been a featured speaker on Native American Art of Oregon for Oregon Humanities, Oregon State Parks, and universities and historical societies.
