Architect William Knighton & the Mysterious “Sentinel”

For more than 30 years, William Christmas Knighton (born December 25, 1867), designed fabulous buildings in Portland and the Willamette Valley. His work includes landmarks like the Deepwood Estate in Salem and the Grand Lodge in Forest Grove, but he is perhaps most notable for his unique design motif for the Seward Hotel (now knowns as the Sentinel) in downtown Portland.

We hope you’ll join us as AHC Education Committee member, walking tour docent, and Knighton expert Bob Clay, explores the career of William Knighton. Bob will discuss many of Knighton’s most significant works and will also take you on an in-depth look at the Seward Hotel, known for many years as the Governor Hotel. Located on SW 10th Avenue, the building has long been recognized for its unique and mysterious architectural iconography, including Knighton’s signature bell-shaped ornamentation and the mysterious and fascinating terra cotta exterior details.
