North Mississippi Walking Tour

Mississippi Ave is home to one of Portland's hippest and oldest East Side neighborhoods. This tour examines the area's 19th century transition from open farmland into one of the cities early street car suburbs as well as  it's 20th century transition into the heart of Portland's African American community. Significant issues of redevelopment and gentrification have had a deep impact on the neighborhood in the last twenty years. These issues, too, will be explored. The tour route is roughly one mile on even terrain.
