Historic King's Hill Neighborhood Tour

As Portland’s elite built mansions ever higher on King’s Hill above booming downtown from the
1880s through the 1920s, they showed off not just their wealth but their great taste in the
latest “modern” designs – hiring the area’s most notable architects. Through the strenuous
efforts of preservation advocates starting in the 1970s, this treasure of gorgeous homes now
survives in the King’s Hill National Register Historic District despite early losses to high-rise
development. Every house has a “story” – of both rogues and heroes who shaped the city’s
history. Learn about this area and how “the other half” once lived!

What You’ll see:
 The home of one of Portland’s magnates-become-historian, who got his revenge on
business adversaries in his 3-volume history of Portland
 Multiple examples of grand homes featuring Greek temples on the front to display their
owners’ wealth and power (and you’ll learn why they did that)
 The sites of three of Portland’s most grandiose houses, including one believed to have
been cursed before its desperate owners had it demolished
 A lush garden once accessed by a tunnel for its fabulously rich owners, running under
the street from their nearby mansion

If driving, allow time for parking. Parking near the park entrance can be a challenge.
